Here’s What To Do If You Hear Sounds In The Wall

You’re about to drift off at night when you hear faint sounds coming from inside your walls. No, this isn’t the opening scene of a horror movie, but it’s still not a pleasant situation. That scratching, squeaking or flapping means you’re not alone! Those sounds mean it’s time to call Albert’s Termite & Pest Control at 309-839-9840.

Different Pests Make Different Sounds

Take note of what you’re hearing and when you’re hearing it. The type of sound can help you determine what kind of pest you’re dealing with. Here are some possibilities:

  • If you hear scratching and scurrying noises in your wall at night, you probably have a rodent problem. Mice and rats are nocturnal, so that’s when you’ll hear them.
  • If you hear scratching noises during the day, squirrels are more likely than mice or rats, as squirrels are awake during the day.
  • If you hear flapping or squeaking, you may have a bat.
  • If birds have gotten in through a breech in your roof or soffits, you may hear scratching noises, likely just during the day.
  • Very faint rustling noises can be due to termites or carpenter ants.
  • A growling noise inside your walls could be caused by a raccoon.

How Do Animals Get Inside The Walls?

Inspect your home for even the tiniest openings. You might be surprised at what small openings may pests need. A mouse, for example, only needs an opening the size of a dime. A rat can get inside if the opening is only the diameter of a quarter. Bugs require even smaller openings. If a piece of soffit is loose, or if a small rotted area has produced an opening in the eaves, various critters will be glad to move into your house to enjoy access to warmth, food and water, and safety from predators. Once they’ve settled into the walls, they can be difficult to remove.

Prevention Is Easier Than The Cure

Patching up holes is far easier than dealing with animals inside your walls. Don’t hesitate to pest-proof your house!

How Can I Remove An Animal From Inside A Wall?

It’s sometimes possible for an animal to fall into a space and be unable to get back out. In these cases, you may have to cut an opening into the wall to extract it. This is not a particularly easy thing to do, so consider calling us to help. We may be able to find a solution that does not involve cutting into your wall.
